What PurGen Is

PurGen is an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant with carbon capture and sequestration.  In addition, PurGen manufactures carbon-free urea – a source of clean, domestic fertilizer.

-    Easily available coal arrives by rail or barge and is then converted to a synthetic gas.

-    During this process, harmful sulfur and mercury can be safely removed.

-   Carbon dioxide is then separated and safely stored deep under the earth’s surface, far offshore.

-   What is left is hydrogen. This will be used to power a combined cycle power plant on the PurGen site.

Goals of PurGen

PurGen is the world’s first traditional fueled power plant able to sequester 90% of its carbon dioxide, demonstrating that there is a cleaner, affordable and safer way to use abundant, domestic fuels while we work to make renewable resources more realistic for long-term use.

PurGen means $9.3 billion in total jobs and economic growth for Northern New Jersey over the 40-year project life.

PurGen will redevelop the site of a former chemical plant in Linden, NJ into one of the cleanest fossil fuel power plants in the world. PurGen will integrate electricity generation, urea manufacturing and greenhouse gas sequestration, safely capturing 90% of greenhouse gases and permanently separating and storing them.

What PurGen is Not

PurGen is NOT a coal fired power plant – coal is never burned as part of PurGen, but is utilized to create a synthetic gas, while separating out its harmful components.

PurGen is NOT experimental – Each of the technologies used in the PurGen project has been tested and proven, with records of success and safety spanning decades.

PurGen will NOT cause air pollution – Our project will sequester 90 percent of its carbon dioxide emissions. In fact, it will have the capacity to sequester carbon dioxide emissions from other nearby sources. In addition, PurGen will install controls to achieve the strictest standards for all air pollutants.

PurGen will help reduce our state’s dependence on dirty coal plants in and out of New Jersey, helping improve our region’s air quality.
